Afternoons and Nights
Afternoons & Nights
By Lacey and Ruby
The sun sets as the shops slowly close and restaurants start to have lots of customers. I sit under the fruit store and nibble on some of the leftover fruits from yesterday. I put them in my pocket and saved them for Thursday's supper. Slowly the bright warm sun disappears to the black night fog as shops close as people rest and snuggle up to their warm sheets and blankets. I still see lights on but only from a far distant city. I want to go there one day…. I hear the nights are clearer and the afternoons warmer but I don't have the money to afford a ticket on the train. Evening set's and night is starting to rise. It gets colder and the warm afternoon sun starts to wear off. People say hi but in a rather awkward way almost as if they didn't mean it…. I miss my friends, my family and my home but it all vanished so quickly. The next morning already felt like the afternoon breeze brushing swiftly across my pale face. I haven't eaten in days and it is finally starting to hit me. The fruit in the fruit store won't do it every 3 days. I sat down wishing my life was back to normal. Soon an old man comes and offers me an apple. I take a big bite then half it with him. He replies with a nice "no thank you" "are you homeless?" The old man asks. "Well yeah.." I say with my head down. then invites me over to his humble home. "Oh you don't have to" I say really thankful for the small apple he gave me. "Please feel free," he says with a big smile on his face. When we arrive, the house looks rather big but rustic. When I walk in he is opening up the old, raggy curtains. I look out the blurry windows to only see a beautiful flower patch filled up with gorgeous white daisies. The afternoon is finally here and he asks if I would like to stay the night. I say yes and thank him as much as I can. We have lamb roast for dinner and I sleep in the guest bedroom. In the morning he asks if I would like to work with him. He said he works to create a better environment. "umm so what exactly do you want me to do?" "run a fruit store!" he tells me. So I agreed and I started to work earning money to help the environment and the fruit store lady. I earned lots of money by running the fruit store at the old fruit store with the owner. And now she has enough money to supply her fruit store. We enjoy spending time together at the fruit store, I think…. just maybe….. she's my friend?
